one wake Petition

Watts Chapel Missionary Baptist Church is proud to be part of the ONE Wake, a coalition comprising 46 institutions, including 42 churches, 2 synagogues, a mosque, and 2 non-profit organizations, collectively representing over 50,000 people in Wake County. ONE Wake’s mission is to harness collective people power, enabling ordinary individuals to have a voice in decision-making processes and effecting meaningful change in our communities.

On October 10, 2024, Watts Chapel will host a ONE Wake Elected Candidates assembly, with an anticipated attendance of 1000 individuals from Watts Chapel and various Wake County churches. At this assembly, we will present our signed petition to the candidates, indicating our collective strength of 10,000 signatures in support of ONE Wake’s Homeownership to Equity campaign. We will request candidates’ commitment to providing land and resources if elected, enabling ONE Wake to construct 1,000 attainable homes and 10,000 affordable apartments.

To sign the petition in support of this initiative, please CLICK HERE.

In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “Power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love.”

For further inquiries, please reach out to info@onewake.org or contact our Watts Chapel leaders Dionne McGee (dionne@dgmcgee.com) and Michael Ray Johnson (mrayjohnson25@gmail.com). You can also stay connected with ONE Wake via https://www.onewake.org/

FAQs:

1. What is Affordable Housing? Affordable Housing is when an individual or family does not spend more than 30 percent of their income on Affordable housing.

2. What happens after we receive the signatures? Attend the Internal Assembly Meeting. Join us on May 16th at 7 pm for the Internal Assembly Meeting, where leaders will present a report from the statewide summit and propose a plan for a statewide candidate assembly. Register for the meeting at Internal Assembly – ONE Wake.

3. Stay Tuned for Training: If you’re interested in getting more involved, stay tuned for an internal Watts Chapel training. This training will equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to make a difference in our community.

4. Appeal to the candidates: We’ll have a public candidate action on October 10, 2024, at Watts Chapel with plans to have 1,000 people, in attendance. We will ask the candidates if they will work with us, give land and resources needed, and meet with us within the first 60 days of their elected terms.

Let us join hands in advocating for equitable housing and making a positive impact in our community for generations to come.
